An original acrylic on canvas painting by acclaimed Western Desert artist Peggy Rockman Napaltjarri (born c.1940), titled “Untitled”, dating to approximately the 1980s.
Peggy Rockman Napaltjarri is a Warlpiri-speaking Indigenous artist from the Western Desert region of Australia. She began painting in 1986 after undertaking an adult education course, becoming known for her expressive interpretations of important Dreamings and ancestral stories.
Her paintings draw from cultural knowledge and Country, including Dreamings such as Ngatijirri (Budgerigar), Warna (Snake), Laju and Ngarlu, translated through colour, movement and symbolic forms. Her work forms part of the continuing story of contemporary Aboriginal art and the preservation of important cultural narratives through painting.
Peggy Rockman Napaltjarri’s work is represented in major Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
