The "X" chair as it was named originated in 15th century Italy (Florence) and named after the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola (1452- 1498) who allegedly used one in his convent.

The style was produced in Middle Eastern, particularly Syria and surrounding regions from the late 19th to 20th century.
